The Philippine Cinema 1 Year, 8 Months ago
It seems like the only Filipino films right now that are getting attention are those crappy, sappy Filipino melodramas. But with Lav Diaz, Raya Martin, Kidlat Tahimik, and Bernal & Brocka, Philippine cinema is on the rise.

Why the hell isn't anyone posting about it?

1. Most 'progressive' films do not entice the general viewer's palette. With enough suffering all around, why watch a film that just hammers that into your brain? Many people watch melodramas to escape not confront. Broka and Bernal has to use sex as a vehicle for people to watch their films and read their statements. Slumdog Millionair didn't sell in India, because of the same reason, and that is why Brillante Mendoza's film will never click here.

2. The independent cinema clique isn't always always producing exceptional films. With the democratization of film with the digital camera, everyone can shoot a film, but no necessarily a good one. This creates an over saturation in the market, and turns off the general public.

3. Funders want a film that sells.

4. We always thought that by making it big in abroad, our works will be immediately taken by the local audience. Not true. There is critical acclaim, but it will not put food on the table, and that's why Raymond Red concentrated on advertising.

5. The local industry is left to a dog-eat-dog mentality. Even if they place nice-nice to each other in parties, many start smear campaigns to others whom they think will outshine them in the future. This pathetic politicking is another cancer to the business.

How to deal with these? Wait for the article
